Dr. Sue Atkinson
Dr Atkinson grew up all-across this fine country. She spent her high school years in Sussex, NB and her mom still lives there. She graduated from Dalhousie in 1990. She completed her medical training in 1992 and started practicing Family Medicine in 1992. She’s been with Dalhousie Family Medicine since 1993, and the Halifax Sexual Health Centre 1/2 day a week since 1992.
Dr Atkinson’s medical interested include women’s health, sexual health, gender affirming care, 2SLGBTQQIA+ health, and minor procedures. She started teaching medical students in 1993. Dr Atkinson and her partner live in Halifax. She loves all animals, especially dogs, and she has an interest in dog training. She also loves music and has sung in a small acapella choir for over 30 years. She enjoys hiking, camping, and canoeing.
Dr Fiona Bergin
Nova Scotia is Dr Bergin’s home. She spent most of her life in Nova Scotia but her dad was in the military, so she lived in England, Ottawa, and Germany as well. She graduated from Dalhousie in 1991. She acquired her Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 1999 and started practicing Family Medicine in 1992. Dr Bergin’s medical interests include longitudinal family practice. She has had some patients in her practice for over 30 years, and she has enjoyed caring for them (and their partners, children, parents and other family members) over that time span.
She started teaching medical students and residents when she became a faculty member at the law school before she joined the Department of Family Medicine in 2002. Dr Bergin has developed undergraduate Health Law curriculum and many educational sessions for residents in all disciplines. She is married with three children and living with several furry friends.
Dr Barry Clarke
Dr Clarke grew up in Halifax. He graduated from Dalhousie in 1987. He completed his medical training in 1989 and started practicing Family Medicine in 1988. Dr Clarke’s medical interests include primary care geriatric fitness/ frailty assessments. Dr Clarke started teaching medical students in 2004.
Prior to that, he was the first ever Director of Dalhousie Health Care of the Elderly program from 1999 to 2016. Dr Clarke was awarded a fellowship designation from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2023.
Dr Daralyn DeBaie
Dr Roetka Gradstein
Dr Gradstein grew up in Bedford, Nova Scotia. She has a Masters of Arts in Education from MSVU. She went to medical school at Dalhousie and graduated in 2007. She completed her medical training in 2009 and started practicing Family Medicine in 2009. She has practiced in Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories.
Dr Gradstein’s medical interests include longitudinal family medicine, family medicine Obstetrics, Women's Health, breastfeeding medicine, and preventative health. She started teaching medical students in 2009. Dr Gradstein has 2 kids and 2 pugs. She started spartan races at age 50 and she is a beginner horse rider.
Dr Jacalynne Hernandez-Lee
Dr Matthew Lee
Dr. Lee is a family doctor from Kjipuktuk/Halifax. He graduated from Dalhousie Medicine in 2019. He completed his medical training in 2021 and started practicing Family Medicine in 2021. He has practiced in Halifax/Kjipuktuk at the Newcomer Health Clinic, Wije'winen Health Centre, and the Halifax Sexual Health Centre before coming to Dalhousie Family Medicine.
Dr Lee’s medical interests include gender-affirming care, refugee health, and care of marginalized populations. He started teaching medical students in 2021.
Dr Kevin Pottie
Dr. Pottie is a distinguished Professor and Research Chair in Family Medicine at Dalhousie University, where he also earned his medical degree. Proficient in English, French, and Spanish, Dr. Pottie has led a remarkable 20-year research endeavor focused on health equity and evidence-based guidelines. His journey in refugee health and humanitarian efforts commenced with Médecins Sans Frontières during the Russia-Georgian war and has since extended across more than 25 countries.
Embracing digital transformation, Dr. Pottie has pursued training AI training, taking the Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare Leaders and Intellectual Property Strategy course. He actively engages in healthcare system consultancy, working on integrating clinical pharmacists, health navigators and internationally trained health professionals into primary care practices.
Dr Laura Sadler
Dr Sadler grew up in Bedford, Nova Scotia. She did her undergraduate degree in Microbiology and Immunology at Dalhousie University and did her Doctor of Medicine at Dalhousie University as well. She graduated in 2007 from Medical School. She completed her medical training in 2009 and started practicing Family Medicine in 2009. She has practiced in Upper Tantallon, Rawdon Hills, Halifax Sexual Health Center, and Dalhousie Family Medicine.
Dr Sadler’s medical interests include technology in medicine, such as electronic medical records, patient and provider communication portals, and technology to improve the administrative burden such as AI scribes/dictation software. Her clinical interests include comprehensive family medicine. She started teaching medical students in 2012. This is her hometown. Dr Sadler enjoy staying active and her immediate family includes her husband, 2 boys, and 2 dogs.
Dr Ashley Simon
Dr Carolyn Thomson
Dr Thomson grew up in Dartmouth. She graduated from Dalhousie in 1989. She completed her medical training in 1991 and started practicing Family Medicine in 1991. She has practiced in NS, NB, BC, New Zealand, and on cruise ships.
Dr Thomson’s medical interests include physican health and wellness, primary and preventative care, and mental health. She started teaching medical students in 1995. Dr Thomson Loves animals, walks in nature, and travel.
